The Yamaha Banshee was produced in the U.S. and Japan from 1987 through 2006. It had the longest manufacturing period of any other ATV on the market, and is still produced in parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and Mexico. The Banshee was equipped with a 350cc, two-stroke engine that was water-cooled. Originally, the engine put out 38 horsepower at 8000 rpms. Improved radiators, air filters and power packs helped to increase the horsepower somewhat. Yamaha patterned the engine after their RD and RZ road bike series. The RZ350 was known for its racing capabilities.

The Yamaha Banshee paved the way for many of today’s larger engine ATVs such as the 4-stroke Yamaha 2009 YFZ450. Original kick-start engines, which the Banshee had, have given way to electric-start engines. The Banshee had a chain driven transmission, where many of the new ATVs are shaft driven. In addition, independent rear suspension has been added to many of the new ATVs, making the ride over rough terrain more comfortable. Yamaha has even invented a power steering system for their new ATVs.
The older Banshees have become the possessions of collectors. They are still very popular in the world of ATVs. The Yamaha Banshee YFZ350 is still ridden for leisure or sport. Due to its specially designed wheelbase and all-around disc brakes, it is ideal for climbing hills and has excellent traction for riding in loose dirt or mud. Its six speed transmission makes it fun to ride and a 12 liter (approximately 2.6 gallons) gas tank provides for fewer stops.
